Thinking people
Slaves after being brought to Caribbean circa 1500 etc, in early 1600’s were brought to the South. It was a horrible economic practice widely practiced for centuries. Still is now. Africans work on plantations in southern states. They did not build Northern industries.
The Chinese were brought in as a de facto slaves and they build railroads, by the way now own quite a bit of San Francisco real estate. French Canadians came to company towns in New England;” I owe my soul to the company store”. They were de facto indentured. Survivors pushed became doctors, business people. They mostly eschewed the “victimhood” notion that keep others stuck.
Many African Americans successful thinkers like Shelby Steele, Tom Sowell understand that.
Presidents Grant and Lincoln etc respected Southern leaders. The South wanted to go their own way. Call it treason or independence. Some of the South wanted slavery but most owned no slaves and simply wanted to not answer to Washington.
Reparations kill incentive. Push, teach economics and trades is big part of solution to poverty.
